Itanium

In February 2008 Intel claimed it has fabricated a chip with 2,000,000,000 transisters. This should be commercially available under the 'Itanium' brand name. My mate Dave says he about to go public with a 2,000,000,001 transister chip but I don't believe him. Yeah, that seems to be about it.

I was going to mention the nVidia 280GTX or Intel's quad core Penryn, but they're only ~1 billion and ~0.9 billion (when you count both die within the package) respectively. What's scary about it is that those 2 billion transistors are fabbed with the 65nm process, not 45nm. That chip has got to be HUGE! It probably wouldn't be able to fit in a LGA socket even if they tried. The period for answering this question has finished Ask a QuestionTroubled by technology?
