After months with my unlocked iPhone still running firmware 1.0.2, the arrival of Zibri's ZiPhone tool persuaded me to try an upgrade. I'm glad I did - I now have an unlocked 1.1.3 iPhone.

CES Here in Las Vegas ahead of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) the first casualty of Warner Home Video's decision to back Blu-ray is the HD DVD shindig scheduled for Sunday night. Clearly unwilling to face the press, the HD DVD camp have cancelled the event. Toshiba and co. are no longer in a party mood.

I have now installed Windows XP Pro on my Eee PC and while the unit's power consumption characteristics are slightly better than they were under the standard Linux installation, it's not as much of a gain as I'd hoped for.

I just downgraded from Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard to the previous release, Tiger. I'd had enough of a recurring glitch that left me looking at the spinning Beach Ball of Death right after Finder starts loading. The only way out: force the computer to power-down.

Updated I've been playing with Apple's Apple TV set-top box this week, and I have to say I like it. But Apple's missing a trick by not allowing those of us - me included - without HD TVs to make the most of the device. No matter: a simple hardware trick solves the problem.

UK hacks have begun receiving invites to an Apple event scheduled to be held at the Mac maker's Regent Street, London store on 18 September. Headed "Mum is no longer the word", the email has already got journos forecasting the UK debut of the iPhone.
